HISTORY OF WAISTBEADS

It’s no secret that I love my waistbeads and I’ve rocked a few sets since January 2019. The history of waistbeads is one rich history in African traditions that started centuries ago. Women would adorn their waists in beads to symbolize womanhood, fertility, protection and spirituality.

WHY I DECIDED TO WEAR WAISTBEADS

I stumbled across Alaiyo on instagram and immediately felt empowered. At that moment I began to research the history of waistbeads and spent a few hours learning and searching to see what I would pick as my first set. I knew this would be a great addition to jazz up my belly and drive my journey of self-love and body positivity even further. Oh, and it’s super cute or at least I feel super cute wearing it.

WHERE I PURCHASE MY WAISTBEADS

I purchased my first set from Alaiyo and it was this cute, yet elegant strand of bronze beads. The set was right in my budget of under $20. I later broke that set by doing the most and adjusting my strand after I had already cut it and ruined it. I bought another set promising myself that I would not do the most and just allow it to be. I loved and wore my new set for a few months until it snapped on me, I promise I wasn’t doing too much this time! Luckily, I was at an expo and Shaped By Waistbeads was there. I immediately re-up and she tied them on my waist and from that point I was complete again. I’ve been rocking this set ever since and I love how my beads adorned my waist.

I’m a lover of affirmations and speaking life into yourself. If you don’t love yourself and your body, then who will? Loving yourself doesn’t mean you don’t want to change/improve/better/enhance anything about yourself, it’s about loving and nurturing yourself as you pursue your goals. Loving yourself can also look like not wanting to change anything about yourself. The best part about loving yourself and your body is that you decide what that looks like for you. My favorite part about wearing waistbeads is that every day my waistbeads remind me to love myself and to speak life into myself, my goals, and my body.
