REMOTE LEARNING SCHOOL SCHEDULE + AFTER SCHOOL ROUTINE

We are back to remote learning again here at the Mathis House! I took the first week off posting on social media and client work to focus on managing life going back to school remote. My goal was to find a good schedule for us and to wrap my mind around everything!

HOW TO CREATE A SCHOOL SCHEDULE

I’m really into schedules and have been since my babies were newborns. I remember researching child-led and parent-led schedules on babycenter.com to learn how to navigate new mom life. I’m a planner and creating schedules to manage life as we enter new seasons helps me cope with not being overwhelmed by it all. New seasons such as sports, summer life, back to school, breaks and etc. I like to create an ideal hourly schedule and also go with the flow (child-led) the first week to tweak the schedule and find more of a balance between child-led and parent-led routine.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK

I’m very grateful that Reg had the opportunity to work from home at the beginning of the pandemic to assist the kids with their school work. Parenting requires a village and I’m blessed that my Mom is able to come in and help the kids on Wednesdays with their school work. During my lunch hour, I will have lunch with the kids and check their school work. Reg’s Mom and my Mom are very helpful and will take the kids some weekends when we need a break!

VIRTUAL BACK TO SCHOOL SCHEDULE

7AM - GOOD MORNING (showers, breakfast)

8AM - NOON -  SCHOOL WORK (review classes daily agenda)

*10AM - 15 MINUTE BREAK (snack)

NOON - LUNCH (with family, check schoolwork)

1PM - 3PM - SCHOOL WORK (check schoolwork)

3PM - EXERCISE (family bike rides/walks, kids riding bikes)

4PM - READ (daily readers, practice handwriting/typing)

5PM - DINNER (with family)

6PM - HOMEWORK (*no homework-free time)

7PM - FREE TIME (playtime, TV time)

8PM - BEDTIME (pick up belongings, brush teeth, wash face)

*Kayin’s bedtime is 8PM (more like 8:15PM) *Cardell’s bedtime is 8:30PM (more like 8:45PM)

We found this schedule to be the best of both child-led and parent-led. I notice some days we needed a break after school and would go on a family bike ride or walk. After schoolwork, the kids must read before they play or have electronics. In the first week of school, the kid’s finished their school work before 3PM, so we gave them additional work. Depending on the day, we may be flexible and have an impromptu family movie night! Please understand that I’m not a strict schedule follower but having this outline helps us stay grounded throughout the day. In other words…Dinner may start at 7PM some days and etc.

I hope this was helpful for you when creating your remote learning school schedule and after school routines. Would love to know how you are managing? Do you create schedules, and are they parent-led or child-led?

I remind myself to have grace with myself, my husband and our kids as we navigate life and remote learning. I know there will be wins and some days where we could have done better. By having a schedule, organization and understood expectations, we are prepared for a great school year at home!

P.S. I’m low-key freaking out that Cardell is in Middle School! I can’t believe Cardell is in 6th grade!
